Modest rise in cement majors' May despatches

THREE cement majors have reported a moderate increase in dispatches of cement, year-on-year, for the month of May 2004.

ACC reported dispatches of 14.07 lakh tonnes for the month, which is 2 per cent higher than dispatches, at 13.79 lakh tonnes, reported by the company for May 2003. Production rose 2.19 per cent, to 13.97 lakh tonnes, from 13.67 lakh tonnes. UltraTech Cemco (earlier L&T Cement), along with subsidiary Narmada Cements, reported a 6.44 per cent increase in combined dispatches of cement and clinker for May 2004, at 14.8 lakh tonnes. Despatches for May 2003 were at 13.9 lakh tonnes.

Domestic shipment of cement for the month fell 4.55 per cent, to 10.3 lakh tonnes, down from 10.8 lakh tonnes; cement dispatches, including exports, dropped 1.36 per cent, to 10.9 lakh tonnes.

Clinker production, at 12.5 lakh tonnes, showed a more robust growth, at 6.84 per cent.

The Ambuja group reported unchanged shipments of cement for May, at 12.3 lakh tonnes, the same as the corresponding year-ago figure. Production rose marginally, by 2 per cent, to 12.3 lakh tonnes, from 12.1 lakh tonnes.

Figures for Grasim Industries are yet to be released.
