FRIENDLY START: The former Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, and his successor, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, greet each other at the first session of the new Assembly on Monday. - A. Roy Chowdhury

Hyderabad , May 31

CLAD in white, red and yellow shirts and sporting angavastram that depict the colour of their party, the recently-elected members took an oath of affirmation during the inaugural session of the 12th Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh on Monday.

Amidst thumping of desks from the treasury benches, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was the first to take oath in the House presided over by the Protem Speaker, Mr P. Sambasiva Raju. Next was the former Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu. Thereafter, it was the turn of the Ministers and other members of the House.

Except for the members of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the legislators belonging to all other political parties were present in the House when the Assembly session began at 11 a.m.

The Telugu Desam Legislature Party members entered the house in a group led by their leader, Mr Chandrababu Naidu. The TRS members entered the House when the Minister for Home, Mr K. Jana Reddy, was taking the oath of affirmation.

As per tradition, the leader of the 294-member House, Dr. Reddy, walked across the floor and greeted the Leader of Opposition, Mr Naidu.

The Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah and the Home Minister, Mr K. Jana Reddy, also shook hands with the Opposition Leader.

The current session of the Assembly ends on June 5. The Speaker will be elected on Tuesday and as per indications, Mr K.R. Suresh Reddy, Congress member from Balkonda in Nizamabad district, was emerging as the likely ruling party nominee to be elected Chairman of the House.

The Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, will address the House on Tuesday evening following the election of the Speaker.

The Ordinance on the vote-on-account budget will be replaced by a Bill on the last day of the Assembly session. A full budget session is expected to be held later in the month.
