Infrastructure Centre promises Rs 12,000 cr to boost Mumbai infrastructure Our Bureau
Mumbai , May 28 THE newly formed Government at the Centre has promised Rs 12,000 crore aid to the Maharashtra Government for infrastructure development of Mumbai. The corpus would be utilised over a five-year period, the State Chief Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, said on Friday. "I met the Finance Minister today afternoon and he has promised to give Rs 12,000 crore for infrastructure development, which requires a total of Rs 18,000 crore. While the Centre would give Rs.12,000 crore, the Government of Maharashtra will put Rs 6,000 crore," Mr Shinde said addressing the 168th AGM of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Mr Shinde highlighted the key achievement of the Government, while making an appeal to the city's business community to come forward and help the Government out of its financial crunch. "We need participation from the private sector even for this (infrastructure development). The industrialists must contribute towards infrastructure development in the city. During the tenure of our Government, the State has received $1000 billion worth of foreign investment intentions and we can do a lot more," he said. Reacting to the statements made by Mr Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro in his speech he had made earlier, Mr Shinde stressed that the industrial bodies had a great role to play in the transformation of the State. He said education, agriculture and infrastructure development were areas "that would bridge development." When queried by the media later, as to how the Government proposes to raise Rs 6,000 crore required for the total corpus granted towards infrastructure development, the Chief Minister said, "We will raise the funds." On the Dharavi slum development project wherein the Centre had promised Rs 500 crore, Mr Shinde blamed the previous Government for the project failing to take off ground.
