K-bip to sign MoU with German expert group

Mony K. Mathew

SES has helped upgrade a coir-making machinery and K-bip is in the process of producing three prototypes.

Thiruvananthapuram , May 27

KERALA Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-bip) is set to sign a memorandum of understanding with Senior Experten Service (SES), a voluntary group of German experts, to make the latter's assistance available to the small and medium enterprises in the State.

SES is an organisation founded and supported by the German Government and the economic community. The idea behind it is to utilise the experience of the retired experts in various fields for the benefit of enterprises in developing countries.

The organisation has on its register more than 5,700 senior experts representing all branches of industry, services and agriculture. Since inception in 1983, it has undertaken nearly 5,000 assignments in 130 countries all over the world.

According to Mr V. Rajagopal, General Manager, K-bip, the services of SES are oriented towards quick and pragmatic assistance, predominantly in technical and economic sectors. The experts do not take on executive functions.

The clients are expected to bear the costs in the assignment country, such as boarding, lodging, transport and pocket money, apart from travel costs and costs within Germany for assignment preparation.

However, for assignments of special importance, a public fund created by the German Government will be made available to meet the costs. The experts do not take payments for the works they undertake.

SES is a vast pool of senior experts with long experiences in fields such as metallurgy, foundry and forging, tool and machine tool manufacturing, plant and apparatus engineering, mechanical, electrical and automobile engineering, communication technology, textiles, wood processing, agriculture, banking and insurance and environmental and waste management.

The experts focus on activities such as installation of machinery, training of personnel in operating and maintenance these machines, assistance in error identification and optimisation, training of personnel in quality control and assistance in fields of management.

Mr Rajagopal said an expert from SES had recently helped upgrade a coir-making machinery and K-bip was now in the process of producing three prototypes of the machine.

SES has an India office functioning at Amritsar and all requests for assistance are routed to Germany through this office. The organisation has so far rendered assistance to more than 150 projects in India.

The MoU in the offing envisages making K-bip the nodal agency for SES in Kerala. The advantage of the arrangement would be that the requests for assistance from SMEs in the State, processed and cleared by K-bip, would not require further assessments, Mr Rajagopal said.
