GPI launches cigars in Vizag

Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM: Godfrey Phillips India Limited launched its imported cigars here on Monday.

Mr Amir Sheik, a spokesman of the company, said on the occasion that GPI, in operation in the country for more than 70 years, was better known in the northern markets for its cigarette brands. But of late it had been making concerted attempts to penetrate the southern markets as well.

He said the GPI had joined hands with the US company, Altadis, the world's leading cigar maker with over fifty brands, to import and sell cigars suited to the Indian market.

Till now, he said, cigars were being smuggled into the country and sold at high prices. With GPI entering the market, there would be no need for that. "Our studies have shown cigars have an appeal for all age groups, especially for the young, and we will target the youth," Mr Sheik said.
