New Govt must focus on farm: Gowda

Gaurav Raghuvanshi

New Delhi , May 22

THE former Prime Minister, Mr H D Deve Gowda, has a bit of advice for Dr Manmohan Singh as the latter takes oath as the country's top executive today.

"The new Government should focus on agriculture, ending unemployment and poverty reduction. These are some of the issues that have long been neglected," Mr Gowda told Business Line.

Praising Dr Singh as "a man known for his integrity, honesty and commitment", Mr Gowda said he was confident that a greater thrust would be given to these crucial problems facing the country's economy.

"In his first press conference after being named the Prime Minister, Dr Singh had outlined his priorities and said that his Government would take care of the weaker sections. I hope that he will do his best to tackle these problems with the cooperation of all secular parties," he said.

Meanwhile, both the Congress and Mr Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular) continued to drive a hard bargain for the post of Karnataka Chief Minister. While the two parties have agreed on Government formation in the State, the issue of the Chief Minister's chair has proved to be the bone of contention.

The Congress, which has seen its strength in the 224-member Assembly fall from 138 to 69 in the State elections, maintains that being the larger party, its nominee should be made Chief Minister.

On the other hand, the Janata Dal (Secular), with 58 members, insists that the Congress is a defeated party and should support its Government from outside.

The issue is likely to be sorted out after the Congress elects its legislative party leader on Monday. Mr Gowda and the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, will hold a one-to-one meeting to resolve the issue, sources said.
