Research & Development Keltron setting up tool room research centre Mony K. Mathew
Thiruvananthapuram , May 9 THE Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron) is setting up a modern tool-room research and training centre with the main objective of providing support to the small-scale industries in the State. Styled the Keltron Toolroom Research and Training Centre (Keltrac), the Rs 15-crore venture is being implemented with financial assistance from the Union Government to the extent of Rs 7.50 crore. The State Government is providing Rs 6.81 crore for the project, which is coming up at the production complex of Keltron at Aroor in Alapuzha district. Keltrac is designed as a centre of excellence in tool engineering conducting research, development, education and training through industry-varsity linkages. It will carry out pioneering research and development activities for industry, impart advanced technical training to skilled workforce and supervisory personnel and develop sophisticated jigs, tools, dies and fixtures, according to Keltron officials. Keltrac has tied up with the Government Tool and Training Centre, Bangalore, for academic courses and training programmes. It is also in dialogue with Cochin University of Science and Technology for higher academic pursuit. Keltrac has entered into an agreement with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) here for transfer of trainer machines and knowhow. Besides, it has signed memoranda of understanding with Indian Space Research Organisation, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and Kerala High Tech Industries Ltd for taking up specific research and development works and import substitution activities. The centre will focus on a vast spectrum of areas, including design and manufacture of press tools, special purpose machines, product development and technical information, advisory and consultancy services. It will have facilities like CNC machines, vertical milling, jig grinding, cylindrical grinding, spark erosion and test and measuring instruments such as 3D coordinate measuring machine and roughness and roundness testers. The Kerala-based industries will be allowed to nominate students for regular training programmes. The centre will also have a placement cell to provide support to the trainees in locating employment within the country and outside.
