Workshop on prevention of torture at Kochi

Our Bureau

Kochi , May 9

A TWO-DAY leadership-training workshop on `torture prevention' organised by the Torture Prevention Centre India and Directorate of Field Publicity with the aim of indicating awareness about the torture prevention among the young generation began here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the function, Ms Valsamma John, District Panchayat Secretary, said that awareness on preventing torture among the young should begin at home.

She stressed the need of inculcating in young children the need to appreciate others, including their own mothers whose selfless service to the family often goes unnoticed and unrewarded.

The Torture Prevention Centre of India Director, Dr S.D. Singh, presided over the function. Later in a face-to-face interaction with the workshop participants, the former Chairperson of the Kerala State Women's Commission and former Kerala High Court judge, Justice D. Sreedevi, said that even the educated women were not aware of the legal provisions which ensured protection against torture and domestic violence.
