Phone subscriber base reaches 78 m

THE country's telephone subscriber base has touched 78 million by the end of April 2004 - a month when 1.65 million new users were added.

The total number of subscribers (both fixed and mobile), stood at 55.12 million in April 2003, which translates into a 41 per cent year-on-year increase, according to figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) here on Saturday.

Assuming a population of one billion, the tele-density in the country stands at 7.8 per cent compared to 5.5 per cent last year.

As per the TRAI figures, the total number of mobile subscribers stood at 35 million while the fixed-line users numbered 43 million. The bulk of the new users were mobile subscribers.
