New Delhi , May 7 THE total number of mobile phone users in the country has touched 34.57 million as of April 2004. The GSM mobile subscriber base has gone up to 27.15 million customers while the CDMA subscriber base reached 7.42 million, according to figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Association of Basic Telecom Operators (ABTO). The two bodies represent the GSM and CDMA operators respectively. While Bharti continues to be the leading player on the GSM platform with 6.76 million subscribers and 25 per cent market share, Reliance has the lion's share in the CDMA section with nearly 6.47 million subscribers. According to COAI, the new additions during April stood at just under a million at 9.9 lakh. This is a 28 per cent decline from the average January-March 2004 figures and a 34 per cent decline from March 2004. Among GSM operators, Hutch occupied the second slot with a total subscriber base of 5.4 million and a market share of 19.85 per cent. It added 0.23 million subscribers in April. BSNL ended the month with a subscriber base of 5.4 million and a market share of 19.73 per cent. The net addition for BSNL in April was 0.12 million subscribers. Idea Cellular notched a subscriber base of 2.8 million and a market share of over 10.37 per cent. Among CDMA operators, Tata Teleservices occupied the second slot. As per the figures, it has 1.67 million subscribers.
