Mumbai , May 5

AN elegant launch function attended by several business and industry heads marked the much-awaited entry of the Hindu Business Line in Mumbai.

The Mumbai edition of the paper will bring to readers the distinctive flavour of the Hindu group of publications — that of credibility, objectivity, integrity and, most important of all, freedom, said Mr N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu group, speaking at the event on Tuesday here.

The Mumbai launch comes a little after 10 years of publication of Business Line, and in the 125th year of publication of its parent paper, The Hindu.

No business paper in the country would be complete without a presence in Mumbai, said Mr K. Venugopal, Executive Editor, Business Line.

The paper was started at a time when Indian economy was coming to grips with liberalisation, Mr Venugopal said. Business Line was itself born into competition; there were three papers already well established. Sobriety would be the hallmark of Business Line even as it will strive to adapt to the changing demands of its readers, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr M. Damodaran, Chairman of both UTI and IDBI, recalled an episode which highlighted the belief among many readers that final confirmation of the truth of anything lay in its appearing in The Hindu.

The industry heads who attended the function included: Mr Deepak Parekh, Chairman, HDFC; Mr Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra; Mr A.K. Purwar, Chairman & Managing Director, State Bank of India; Mr Kishore Chaukar, Director, Tata Industries; Mr R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons; and Mr M.S. Banga, Chairman, Hindustan Lever.
