New Projects Lifan firms up plans for engine, bike unit Neha Kaushik
New Delhi , May 5 THE Rs 22,000-crore China-based Lifan Group has firmed up its plans for the Indian market. The company is in the process of setting up a motorcycle manufacturing unit in Manesar and an engine plant in Pune. ``We are investing about Rs 250 crore for the same,'' said Mr R. Chhibbar, Indian Representative, Chongqing Lifan Industry Group. The initial capacity at both the plants will each be 100,000 units per annum. In addition to developing 125 cc and 150 cc bikes initially, Lifan plans to make a dual-wheel vehicle for the Border Security Force and the army that can be effectively used in place of camels in desert areas. The vehicle, which has four rear wheels, will also be targeted at key tourist spots located in hilly areas. Meanwhile, Lifan is in talks with various players to supply them engines from its unit in Pune. Apart from enquiries from neighbouring countries, Lifan is negotiating with various local firms to supply them engines. The companies include International Tractors Ltd for its proposed three-wheeler project, three-wheeler manufacturer Atul Auto, SAS International and Uttar Pradesh-based auto components maker Sachdeva Enterprises. It is learnt that both SAS and Sachdeva have plans to enter the three-wheeler market soon. Lifan's engine and two-wheeler plants are expected to commence production by November-December this year. Lifan has already obtained permission from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for its proposed bikes for the Indian market. While in the first year the company intends to roll out bikes in the 125 cc and 150 cc segments, it intends to enter the 100 cc to 850 cc range subsequently. The company is among the top exporters of two- wheelers from China.
