TVS Motor sales slip in April

Our Bureau

Chennai , May 3

TVS Motor Company's total two-wheeler sales in April 2004 stood at 81,032 units compared to 84,747 units, during the same period last year.

The April sales of motorcycles dropped by one-fifth compared to the same month last year. TVS Motor sold 46,881 units last month, compared to 56,291 in April 2003.

At a press conference on Sunday, TVS Motor's Chairman and Managing Director Mr Venu Srinivasan, attributed the decline in sales to depressed demand for two-stroke motorcycles as well as competition from vehicles in the same class, such as Bajaj's Passion and Hero Honda's Splendour Plus.

However, the company sold in April almost twice as many scooterettes as it did in April 2003. Last month, it sold 15,172 Scooty vehicles, compared to 9,880 units in the same month last year.

A press release from the company pointed to two milestones achieved in the recent months.

First, sales of Scooty vehicles have crossed the one million-unit mark. Second, sales of Centra motorcycles that were launched in January have crossed the 50,000-unit mark.

Moped sales stood at 18,972 units in April 2004 (16,576 units) - a growth of 14 per cent. On the export front, TVS Motor sold 3,027 units in April, nearly three times as many as it exported in the same month last year.
