Announcements TNPL resumes production Our Bureau
Chennai , April 28 TAMIL Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd resumed production from Saturday after suspending operations for nearly three weeks due to water shortage. The company had informed the stock exchange that production commenced on Paper Machine 2. The other machine, Paper Machine 1, is likely to be started during the first week of May. The Paper Machine 2 is capable of producing cream wove and newsprint, and production is now at about 350 tonnes of cream wove a day. TNPL's average daily production is estimated at about 650 tonnes, according to reliable sources. The Paper Machine 1 is for producing high quality surface sized papers. TNPL has taken the opportunity to carry out maintenance work on the machine, before restarting it, sources said. It may be recalled that the company informed the stock exchange on April 5 that it had suspended production due to water shortage. Water shortage is a problem that has plagued TNPL's production facility during peak summer, particularly during drought. The unit with a production capacity of about 2.3 lakh tonnes of printing and writing paper is located in Karur district and depends on water from the Cauvery. Last year also it lost about 25 days of production due to water shortage. The factory has facility to store about 12-lakh cubic metres water during the flush period. This would help them to meet nearly a month's requirement. It has also implemented water conservation measures to bring down water consumption. According to official statistics, water consumption per tonne of paper has been brought down from 124 KL in 1999-2000 to 105 KL in 2002-03, and in 2003-04, this was reduced to 73 KL.
