THE US Consul General for South India, Mr Richard Haynes, on Wednesday inaugurated a `fuel testing centre' funded by the US Asia Environment Partnership (USAEP) and the California Air Resources Board.
The lab, the first of its kind in India, would draw samples from retail fuel outlets and analyse them to detect any adulterants. "It will serve as a model both for Tamil Nadu as well as for other States in India as adulteration of fuel is a nation-wide problem," says a press release from the US Consulate here.
Under the USAEP Council for State Governments Program, the Partnership has provided a grant of $1,50,000 to the projects' partners. The partners are the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and a NGO based in Tamil Nadu called Centre for Consumer Education, Research, Training and Testing.
