Visakhapatnam , April 19

THE leader of the Telugu Desam parliamentary party in the dissolved Lok Sabha, Mr K. Yerran Naidu and five others travelling in his car were wounded in a landmine blast triggered allegedly by Naxalites on the outskirts of Srikakulam town on Sunday midnight.

All the passengers escaped with minor injuries. Mr Naidu is contesting again for the Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat. The elections in the north-coastal districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram are to be held on Tuesday in the first phase.

Mr Naidu was returning to his house at Srikakulam from Tekkali in the district after campaigning for his party, when the incident occurred at Singupuram junction on the outskirts. The front portion of the car was badly damaged.

Mr Naidu was immediately taken to the Government general hospital at Srikakulam in another car and after first aid he was taken to his house. In a statement issued from Hyderabad, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, condemned the attack and said the Naxalites were striking at Telugu Desam leaders to create a fear psychosis, but they would not succeed in their designs.

In another statement, Mr M.V.V.S Murthy, the member from Visakhapatnam in the dissolved Lok Sabha and the present TDP candidate, said Mr Yerran Naidu and the others had a providential escape.
