Alternative proposals

This with reference to "Impasse at WTO" (Business Line, April 17). The impasse continues because the rich economies are unwilling to make any specific concessions in such spheres as export subsidies and domestic farm support.

If this could not be achieved, developing countries should think of alternative proposals for subsidising their own farm sectors and exports to combat the existing order. India should simultaneously concentrate on infrastructure build up the agricultural sector and make it competitive to world standards.

The export of farm products should help India achieve the target of 1 per cent share in global trade and help farmers to secure remunerative prices.
