AP CM reiterates promise on Godavari projects

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , April 15

THE Telugu Desam is committed to taking up the Polavaram and Icchampalli projects on the Godavari to make full use of the river waters and both the projects will be components of the plan to form a national river grid linking the Ganga and Cauvery, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister, has said.

Answering a query at a press meet here on Thursday morning on the mega Polavaram project, he said the foundation stone for the project had been laid in 1983 by the then Congress chief minister, Mr T. Anjaih, but nothing much could be done since then, as there were many inter-State issues involved and the project was too high for the State Government to bear.

``Now, with the national river grid plan, such mega projects can be taken up and both Polvaram and Icchampalli can be turned into realities. The NDA Government is serious about the river grid plan and there need be no doubts on the issue,'' he reiterated.

The Congress, on the other had, did not have any such clear plans and was making all sorts of poll promises without stating the requisite resources, he alleged. ``They are promising everything free and in the end it will be a free-for-all. There will be total anarchy,'' he said, referring to the Congress promise to provide free power to the farm sector.

He said his party was committed to an agenda of development within the framework of a united Andhra Pradesh and ``I am sure the people of all the three regions will repose faith in me and my party, as they did in the last elections.''
