Letters Reform promises
This refers to the editorial "Reforms and promises" (Business Line, April, 12). As rightly stated in the editorial, the economic reforms would have been more popular had they been oriented to aspects of human development such as education, health, women's welfare and so on. The basic objective of the economic reforms should be "growth with development" rather than mere growth. Though the Government, through the process of reforms, has been able to achieve economic growth, failed to translate its benefits of reforms into human development. Evidently, India's position in the Human Development Index decreased to 127 from 124 during the period 2001-2002 despite the fact that its position was 115 in per capita income. It implies that much less was done by the Government during 2001 to meet the basic developmental needs of the people than was possible with its per capital income. C. Ramesh Keeramangalam (TN)
