MTNL arm eyes foreign partner for BPO operations

`We want to do something on the lines of what the Bharti group did for its BPO operations. We do not want to spend time and energy starting from scratch'

Mumbai , April 12

MILLENNIUM Telecom Ltd (MTL), fully owned subsidiary of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), has decided to seek a foreign joint venture partner for its business process outsourcing operations.

Such a joint venture would allow MTL to quickly ramp up operations to international standards and also help it acquire international business, said a senior official with MTL. "We do not want to spend time and energy inventing the wheel from scratch, at a time when the Indian BPO industry is doing very well," he said.

Once the internal formalities are cleared, the company would issue a tender inviting joint venture partners. He said the finer details, as to whether it would be an equal joint venture and the like, were being worked out.

"We want to do something on the lines of what the Bharti group did for its BPO operations. It entered into a joint venture with the US BPO company TeleTech Holding Inc," said the official. Bharti entered into an equal joint venture with TeleTech. (However, Teletech is believed to be acquiring majority stake in the joint venture.)

MTL had last year appointed Siemens Information Systems Ltd as consultant for its BPO project for an advisory fee of Rs 1 crore. The company was advising MTL on strategy and management for its project, the initial plan for which included two 1000-seater call centres, one each in Mumbai and Delhi.

These multi-functional call centres would meet the in-house customer care requirements of MTNL and, more importantly, help generate additional revenues by taking on other domestic and international contracts. "It was decided that if possible, MTL would also lease out excess capacity," said one of the MTNL officials closely associated with the project.

MTL was initially set up to take care of non-mainstream activities of MTNL. These would include IT-enabled services, Internet services and later on, "e-services", according to officials.

They said MTNL was readying applications, developed to deliver "universal telecom solutions" both for captive use as well as for other telecom operators.
