Isolated rains forecast in Kerala

KERALA received isolated rains and thundershowers over the past four days, says the Agromet Advisory Bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre Thiruvananthapuram on April 12. The forecast valid till April 14 says that rain or thundershowers will occur at isolated places in all the districts of Kerala.

The chief amounts of rainfall in cm are:

April 8: Kuppady - 4, Hosdurg - 3, Ambalavayal - 2 and Kannur 1

April 9: Ambalavayal - 3 and Munnar - 1

April 10: Nedumangad - 6, Aryankavu and Neyattinkara 3 each and Varkala - 2

April 11: Punalur - 2

Mean Maximum temperature varied between 33 degree C and 35 degree C in various districts of the State. The highest maximum temperature of 35.7 degree C was recorded in Thiruvananthapuram on April 9.

The mean relative humidity varied between 64 per cent and 77 per cent in various districts of the State.

State and stage of corps: The puncha paddy crop is in the harvest stage. Pulses and vegetables in rice fallows are in the flowering stage. Seed nut collection is in progress in coconut and cashew. New planting is continued in tapioca, tuber crops, banana, ginger and turmeric. Land preparation and digging of pits for new planting is in progress for coconut and rubber. In pepper, planting of live standards is in progress, while fruit trees continue to be harvested.

Advisory for three days: The bulletin cautions that red palm weevil can cause severe destruction to young palms. If symptoms are noticed, the crown of the palm should be cleaned and carbaryl 50 per cent WP at 20gm per litre of water should be poured into the trunk using a funnel to destroy the grubs.

The bulletin advises that weeding and top dressing operations can be carried out for vegetables.

In order to control mites and aphids, dimethoate at 1.7 ml per litre of water can be sprayed.

For pineapple crops, weeding can be done prior to top dressing. The developing fruit should be covered to protect it from the sun, the bulletin adds.

In cardamom, clumps affected by the katte disease should be destroyed, says the bulletin. Land preparation for raising viruppu nurseries can be commenced, it adds.
