Bangalore zone steps up vigil against duty fraud

DUTY rationalisation and lower duties under special accord between certain countries have not deterred `duty fraud' so much so that it is emerging as a new trend from the Bangalore zone of the Excise and Customs. While the entire Bangalore zone, consisting of Bangalore, Mangalore and Cochin, accounted for about Rs 40 crore, Bangalore circle alone had contributed about 50 per cent at Rs 22 crore.
The Department however was able to recover Rs 11 crore after careful scrutiny.
Disclosing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, the Customs and Excise officials said that the Department was watching carefully to prevent such incidence. The `duty fraud' detection related to anti-dumping, "mis-declaration" of export obligation and misrepresentation about imports on concessional duty rates from certain countries with whom India had special agreements.
This was emerging as a trend in Bangalore circle, said Mr B.B. Aggarwal, Additional Commissioner (Customs), adding "we have stepped up our vigil".
Meanwhile, the Bangalore zone exceeded the target of Rs 3,800 crore in revenue collection by 3.3 per cent at Rs 3,925 crore for the year 2003-04 as compared to a 12.51 per cent increase over collection of Rs 3,489 crore in fiscal 2002-03, said Mr R. Sunder Raman, Chief Commissioner of Customs, and Mr P.R. Chandrashekaran, Commissioner Customs (Bangalore).
