Mumbai , April 5 IN what might appear a little ironical, Reliance Infocomm has launched international roaming services that will allow Reliance IndiaMobile customers to roam internationally on GSM networks. In addition, this will require that the RIM customer use a SIM card in a GSM handset. Calls and SMSes to this customer's RIM home number will be forwarded to his new SIM card and a consolidated bill for both home and international usage presented. CDMA technology does not provide true international seamless roaming and it could well be that the unified licence has aided CDMA operator Reliance in launching this facility. Roaming is possible through a SIM card which will be provided to the RIM customer who is travelling abroad. This card when used with a GSM handset will enable a RIM customer to receive all calls made to his/her number as well as to make outgoing calls while travelling in any of the 172 countries where Reliance Infocomm has roaming agreements. Reliance Infocomm has tied up with 300 mobile networks. "It is for the first time that a global roaming facility has been made available by a CDMA operator on GSM networks on such a large scale," said a news release from the company. A monthly rental of Rs 99 will be charged as well as an additional deposit that would depend on the customer's credit-worthiness.
