Waste management training in Madurai

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: A training programme on hazardous waste management is to be held in the city on April 8.

According to Mr R.Vijayabhaskaran, District Environmental Engineer, the Environmental Training Institute, Chennai would be conducting the programme, which will be more beneficial to industries like electro-plating units.

A month ago, the training needs of the industries were assessed and a training module has been developed. The Small Industries Service Institute, Chennai and the National Environmental Research Institute would supply the technical inputs to the programme. The focus would be on minimising the wastages and also provide an insight into effective waste management. He further said that the proposed common effluent treatment plant at the Electro Platers and Metal Finishers' Eco-Industrial Park at T. Karisalkulam would operate on the latest membrane technology, based on the reverse osmosis method.

Mr S. Raja, Secretary, Electro Platers and Metal Finishers' Association, Tamil Nadu, said the common effluent treatment plant at T. Karisalkulam, estimated at a cost of Rs 15 crore at a 22-acre site for the project, is going on in full swing. The State and Central Pollution Control Boards have been approached for grant of subsidies in establishing the plant.

The project is likely to be completed by March 2005. It will be a model with all necessary infrastructure required for an industrial estate with a state-of-the-art laboratory and a training centre. A similar park is being planned at Coimbatore too, he added.
