Munnabhai MBBS finds place in UK medical journal

Mumbai , April 3

DOCTORS have been an integral part of Bollywood plots. But Munnabhai has been able to achieve something that many of his predecessors on the screen have not managed. The film Munnabhai MBBS has found a mention in the latest Web edition of British medical journal.

The hugely popular film has been reviewed by Dr Sanjai Pai, consultant pathologist, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. He makes a mention of the correct usage of medical terminology and real locations.

"Beneath the surface humour there is a hidden — or perhaps not so hidden — message throughout,'' he says.

Pointing out to the scene where one of the patients is referred to as exhibits, Dr Pai says that such references can be humiliating for patients.

"I know from my own experience as a patient when a classmate saw me purely as an `interesting case'."

"As one who firmly believes that physicians must read outside their profession to become better doctors, I found myself strongly recommending Munnabhai MBBS to all my colleagues. They will find it a riot and some will perhaps reflect on it,'' Dr Pai adds.

The film, which has Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi and Gracy Singh as leading actors, is a story about Murli Prasad Sharma (Munna). His father wants him to become a doctor but Munna becomes a bhai, a euphemistic reference to Mumbai's underworld don. But some scenes later he decides to go on the reform course and takes up medical studies.
