Performance Maruti sales rise 30 pc in 2003-04 Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 1 AIDED by easy finance schemes, new variants and discounts, car market leader Maruti Udyog Ltd has announced a 30 per cent rise in volume sales to 472,122 units in 2003-04 from 362,242 units in the previous year. The company said in a statement that the sales level in fiscal 2003-04 marks the highest-ever sales for the company ever since it began operations 20 years ago. The annual sales figure includes exports of 51,175 units, the highest-ever since Maruti began exporting cars in 1988. March 2004 also marked a high for the company, with sales of 52,700 units, including 8,282 exports, which is the highest-ever sales in the domestic market in a month by Maruti. This is also the highest-ever export in a month by the company. The compact car segment, consisting of the Maruti Zen, Alto, and WagonR, drove sales for the company in the year. Maruti's compact cars grew by 46.1 per cent to 176,132 units last fiscal, against 120,516 units in the previous year. The year saw Maruti roll out redesigned variants of its WagonR and Zen. Incidentally, the Alto saw maximum sales growth in the segment, growing by about 130 per cent in the year. Sales of the company's bread-and-butter model, the Maruti 800, grew by 16.9 per cent to 167,561 units in the year. Market watchers point out that the company's tie-up for car finance with the State Bank of India has given it higher reach in smaller towns. The company also recently rolled out an aggressive scheme to promote the Maruti 800, stressing that one can buy the car for an EMI of as little as Rs 2,599 per month.
