Coimbatore , April 1

INCREASED excise duty revenue earned by the Tiruchy Excise Commissionerate drives the overall excise income for the Coimbatore central excise zone to post a 13 per cent revenue growth during the year 2003-04 over the previous fiscal.

The Coimbatore excise zone, comprising five excise commissionerates of Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Salem, Madurai and Tirunelveli, has netted Rs 3,135 crore as excise revenue for the year-ended March 31, 2004 as against Rs 2,773 crore during the fiscal 2002-03.

The excise realised during the just concluded fiscal year has surpassed the target of Rs 3,107 crore fixed for the 2003-04 period by Rs 27 crore, according to the Chief Commissioner of the Coimbatore Central Excise Zone, Mr J.M.K. Sekhar.

The provisional excise figure realised indicate that Tiruchy Commissionerate came on top with a mop of Rs 1,171 crore followed by Coimbatore with Rs 886 crore, Salem (Rs 405.50 crore), Madurai (Rs 366 crore) and Tirunelveli (Rs 305 crore).

The real movers in the excise income of Tiruchy Commisionerate are petroleum products from the public sector oil companies' distribution installations at Karur and the impressive performance from the public sector engineering major, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, at Tiruchy, which pushed up overall excise mop for the zone.
