THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government-owned Centre for Development of Information Technology (C-DIT) has won two research and development projects worth Rs 1.25 crore.
An official spokesman said here that these projects pertain to developing refreshable tactile graphic display for those with impaired vision and holographic optical elements for optical fibre communication. The refreshable tactile graphic display converts computer graphics into three-dimensional images, which can be used to provide training to the visually impaired.
This is the first project of its kind to be developed indigenously, according to Dr Achyut Sankar S. Nair, Director, C-DIT.
The holographic optic elements project involves the development of holograms on light-sensitive three-dimensional crystals. This technology is of utmost significance for fibre optical communications and is the monopoly of a lone US-based company. C-DIT intends to carry out this project in a joint venture with NeST Research and Development Centre in Kochi. Dr P.T. Ajith Kumar, Head, Image Processing Division, C-DIT, will coordinate the joint venture project, the spokesman added.
