`Tech upgradation a must for refractories'

Visakhapatnam , March 23

REFRACTORIES in Andhra Pradesh in particular, and the country in general, will have to upgrade their technologies to face the competition in the domestic and global markets, as most industries are trying to cut costs, Mr Y. Sivasagara Rao, Director, Commercial, Visakhapatnam steel plant, said.

He said at a press meet here that an international seminar would be held here for three days from April 5 on refractory technologies for the benefit of the units in the State.

He said it would be organised by the Indian Institute of Refractories Engineers (IIRE) and the Institute of Refractories Engineers, the UK, in association with the Visakha- patnam steel plant. The officials of the AP Industries Department would also participate in it.

Mr Rao said the plant was sourcing roughly 50 per cent of its refractory requirements from the units within the State and the rest from outside.

``The steel plant requires 30,000 tonnes per annum and we are willing to buy the whole lot from local units. But some of the products call for specialised technologies, which are not locally available. That is why we are organising the seminar,'' he explained.

He said that locally no testing facilities were available and he had requested the State Government to set up a testing lab here for the benefit of local units. ``It will go a long way in improving quality,'' he added.
