Tea Bengal to supply tea through ration shops Our Bureau
Kolkata , March 17 THE West Bengal Government has taken a policy decision to distribute through ration shops, the tea produced by the crisis-ridden tea gardens in the State, which would be run through workers co-operatives if the workers were prepared. This was mentioned in the budget document presented by the West Bengal Finance Minister, Dr Asim Dasgupta, on Tuesday. He said the State Government had accepted in-principle all the recommendations of the committee, which it had set up to review the reasons behind the crisis in the State's tea industry. Dr Dasgupta noted that along with the tea industry in the entire country, the industry in the State had also been passing through a severe crisis. Out of the 277 tea gardens in North Bengal, 22 have remained closed and nearly 21,000 workers have been affected, he said. Although no effective steps have been found to have been taken by the Central government, the State Government has already started taking some measures. These were providing special relief and public health services for workers of closed tea gardens, implementing self-employment schemes in abandoned tea gardens and bringing workers of gardens closed for over a year under the purview of the scheme of l assistance of Rs 500 per month for closed industries.
