Power Narmada dam height up to 110 mt cleared Our Bureau
Gandhinagar , March 16 THE Narmada Control Authority (NCA) has permitted the raising of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) main dam height to 110.64 metres from the existing level of 100.64 mts. With the minimum height required for generating hydro-electric power given the nod, it would take only 120 days for the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) to generate 450 MW of power, said the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, here on Tuesday. "The project should get completed in the next 120 days where 250 MW of canal head power would be generated by way of five generators of 50 MW each. Another 200 MW would be ready for generation at the riverbed by September this year. Once the 110.64 metre height is reached, the dam water that is currently flowing through Integrated By-Pass Tunnels (ITBPs) will start flowing through the main canal," Mr Modi said in a press release here. However, it may take a while before SSNNL gets to realise its full potential of 1,450 MW of hydro electric power as another five 200 MW power plants will need to be commissioned from the Narmada riverbed. Gujarat stands to get the lowest share of the hydropower at 16 per cent while Madhya Pradesh stands to become the biggest beneficiary with 57 per cent share, followed by Maharashtra with 27 per cent. The next phase of the SSP which will see the crucial 10 metres added to the existing dam height of 110 metres, will cost Rs 120 crore and augment the reservoir capacity by 11,000 lakh cubic metres. While the present Narmada dam reservoir capacity is 26,000 lakh cu.m. the additional height will take up the capacity to 37,000 lakh cu.m.
