Promotions & Offers Industry & Economy - Textiles Nabarad plan to promote `Sungudi' saris Our Correspondent
Madurai , March 14
THE National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) and the Ministry of Textiles have evolved an action plan to promote the famous `Sungudi' saris from the temple city. According to the Nabard Assistant General Manager, Mr R. Srinivasan, here, the officials have identified a `tie and dye' cluster, which would be trained on skill/technology upgradation. A common service centre has been established where experts from the National Institute of Fashion Technology would train the weavers on quality control. Considering the export potential of this traditional business, it is also proposed to exhibit the `Sungudi' saris in `Dilli Haat', a permanent handicrafts exhibition in New Delhi, he added. The three-year action plan, said Mr Srinivasan, aims at exposing the weavers to the use of modern equipment, innovative marketing strategies and creative design works. In order to reach out to the international market, a launch of a Web site on `Sungudi' saris and their traditional background on the Internet is being worked out, he said, adding that a district-level committee, comprising officials of the Nabard and the Handicrafts Department, has been formed to monitor the implementation of the joint venture.
