New Delhi , March 13

AIRTEL has announced the signing of the first-ever bilateral roaming agreement between an Indian mobile service provider and its counterpart in Pakistan.

With this agreement in place, AirTel will be able to extend roaming facility to all its customers travelling to Pakistan with immediate effect. This facility will be available to pre-paid as well as post-paid customers. AirTel's roaming agreement is with Mobilink, the only GSM cellular service provider in Pakistan.

According to an official statement, with the roaming facility now available to AirTel customers in 15 circles across India, they would be able to stay connected using the same mobile number, both in India as well as Pakistan. Its post-paid customers would be able to make and receive voice calls as well as send and receive SMS while the pre-paid customers can receive voice calls and SMS. The roaming facility would be available to AirTel customers for a period of four months.

For Indian roamers the tariffs have been fixed at Rs 25 per minute for local calls to any number in Pakistan, Rs 35 per minute for calls to any number back in India between 9.30 p.m. and 7 a.m. and Rs 45 per minute otherwise. Outgoing SMS charges have been pegged at Rs 12 per message sent.
