CII, Myanmar chamber tie up

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , March 8

IN an effort to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Myanmar, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has tied-up with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Commerce and Industry, to set up a task force to examine areas of cooperation between the two countries.

"The joint task force will focus on three areas including looking at increasing investment flow between India and Myanmar. Besides, tourists particularly Indians who are travelling abroad in large numbers will also be encouraged to visit Myanmar," the CII Deputy Director-General, Mr S. Sen, told Business Line.

The task force, which is scheduled to have a two-day meeting in Kolkata from April 6, has assured the Myanmar Government that it would prepare a report within six months for strengthening relations. Besides, the issue of increasing border trade between the Indian States bordering Myanmar will also be examined by the task force.

The two apex chambers have also decided to set up a chief executive officers' forum, which is to meet at least once a year, and look at ways of promoting trade and investment between India and Myanmar.

In addition, the CII has also agreed to help the Myanmar Government organise a `Made in Myanmar' exhibition in India. "Holding such an exhibition will help India know what Myanmar has to offer," Mr Sen said.
