Commission for farmers

This refers to "National Commission on Farmers, at last" (Business Line, March 3). As rightly stated, the emphasis of the National Commission on Farmers is on the farmer rather than agriculture. Curiously, while agriculture falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, the welfare of farmers falls under more than one ministry.

Ensuring adequate remuneration for the farmers for their produce is an area being dealt by the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP). Similarly, some other terms of reference of the NCF fall within the purview of the Food Ministry at present. Thus, the main task of the NCF should be more of a coordinator and facilitator of the various ministries rather than an individualistic commission.
