Shipping Concor to begin operations at Paradip port in three months Santanu Sanyal
Kolkata , March 2 THE competition among east coast ports to attract container traffic is set to intensify. Less than a year ago, a container terminal was commissioned at Visakhapatnam port. It is now Paradip port's turn. The Container Corporation of India (Concor) will soon undertake the entire gamut of operations relating to the handling of container traffic at Paradip port. The Shipping Ministry has cleared the proposal in this regard and the MoU between the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) and Concor is being finalised. If everything goes as per schedule, Concor will start operation at Paradip in three months. As per the arrangement finalised between them, Concor will not only transport the containers to and from the port but will also be responsible for their transfer between the vessel and the container park yard (CPY), loading of the boxes into the vessels and their unloading from the vessels and stuffing and destuffing in CPY. "Certain operations which normally the port authorities are supposed to undertake will be taken over by Concor," according to informed sources. The senior officials of Concor as well as the Shipping Ministry visited Paradip before taking decision on the matter. The port has earmarked two of its berths, EQ1 & EQ2, to enable Concor to undertake loading/unloading operations and about 30,000 sq metres of land to be used as CPY. Concor will install the handling equipment in the berths, particularly, rail mounted gantry cranes and reach stackers, one each to start with. If equipments are not available domestically, it is likely to be imported.
