`Plastics are useful, if handled with care'

Kolkata , Feb. 26

THE West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has said that there are various advantages of using plastic materials and they do not damage the environment if handled with care.

Addressing a seminar on `Building competencies in the plastics sector,' he said that there are various advantages of using plastic materials and, "if handled properly, they do not damage our environment. What is needed is awareness about advantages and proper use of plastics."

The seminar was organised by the Indian Plastics Federation in association with PlastIndia Foundation — the apex body for the plastics sector.

He said that with the setting up of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd new opportunities are being created in the plastics industry in West Bengal, and so far 615 downstream units have been set up within the State and outside. These units have given employment to 24,441 people.

The Chief Minister's observations gain significance on account of the initiatives launched by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board to ban the use of plastic carry bags at various public places in the State.

It has also restricted the manufacture of these bags below a specified thinness of material.

Responding to a plea by the plastics industry, he said that he would take up with the Union Commerce Ministry the issue regarding huge influx of plastic products from Nepal.

Earlier, Mr J.C. Agarwal, IPF President, said import of plastics finished goods from neighbouring countries like Nepal have become a major threat for the industry and the provisions of the Indo-Nepal Treaty were being misused.

Dr S. Dhara, Vice-President, HPL, said plastics were acknowledged as a cost-effective superior product when compared to conventional materials because it can substitute wood, metal, glass and paper, which consume more energy during production.
