Ms Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan, Financial Commissioner, Railways, inaugurates the touch screen facility and Web-enabled suppliers' bill queries at the Stores Accounts office of the Southern Railway in Chennai on Thursday. - - Shaju John

Chennai , Feb. 19

SOUTHERN Railway has uploaded suppliers' bills (payment to be made by it to vendors) on the Internet. This would enable suppliers to know the latest status of their bills on the Web.

Launched as a pilot today, the facility would be available to those suppliers who have opted for electronic funds transfer (EFT) mode of payment. Ms Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan, Financial Commissioner, Indian Railways, launched the facility at Stores Accounts Office, Southern Railway, Perambur. Suppliers need to log on to www.southernrailway.org to know the bill status.

The EFT system would dispense with issue of cheques individually to suppliers. Instead, payment against their bills would be directly credited into supplier's bank account electronically through the RBI. The system would also eliminate delay in transit/clearing of bills and ensure availability of money to suppliers on the same day, or on the next bank working day, says a Southern Railway release.

Mr M. Jeychandren, Financial Advisor and Chief Accounts Officer, Workshop and Stores, said the new facility would help about 2,000 suppliers outside the State to know the status of their payment dues, saving them money on telephone charges.

Ms Viswanathan also inaugurated the electronic clearing scheme for payment of salary of Southern Railway employees in workshops and joint office. She also launched a touch screen kiosk to enable suppliers to know the latest status of their bills.
