Announcements Owens Corning plans glass fibre knitting at Taloja Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 18 THE Taloja plant of Owens Corning India Ltd (OCIL), a joint venture between the US-based Owens Corning and Mahindra & Mahindra, will soon have glass fibre knitting capability. Announcing this on Wednesday, Owens Corning said that the investment would add fabric knitting to the plant's existing roving operations and cater to the growing market demand in the country and its surrounding regions, especially for the wind energy sector. India is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of installed capacity of windmills. Mr Jeff Boersma, Vice-President and General Manager of Owen Corning's fabrics business, said: "This investment is another step in demonstrating our commitment to the growth of the composites industry as well as the fabrics market, by expanding our ability to make and distribute all facets of fabrics on both a local and worldwide basis." According to Mr Satish Kulkarni, Managing Director, OCIL, the capacity investment would be key for India on a number of fronts. For one, the expanded capacity at Taloja would benefit the country in terms of economic development and energy conservation, especially in view of the current energy situation and the need for continued growth of alternate energy sources like wind energy.
