Non-conventional Energy Solar power to electrify 20,000 villages by 2007 Our Correspondent
Madurai , Feb. 18 TWENTY thousand remotely located villages across the country would be electrified using solar power by 2007. The project would be implemented by the Union Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources with the help of respective State Governments, according to Mr N.P. Singh, Advisor to the Ministry. Speaking to presspersons here, he said energy generation through non-conventional means would be stepped up from the existing 4,000 MW of grid quality power to 10,000 MW by 2012. India has emerged as an exporting nation of solar panels and cells in the last three years. The country has marketed solar energy products, worth Rs 11 crore, for generating 45 MW, in developed countries, he added. Mr K. Allaudin, Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), said in the first phase of electrification, using solar power, a total of 154 hamlets would benefit in the State. Under the scheme, all the 7,100 households in the hamlets would be given solar power generation kits worth Rs 12,000 each for using two lights, along with streetlights. Meanwhile, the Anna University would conduct a detailed survey of the energy requirement in another 250 hamlets, for which solar power would be provided in the second phase, he mentioned. Earlier, addressing a seminar on `Uses of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Technologies for Small and Medium Industries', organised by the TEDA, the District Industries Centre, and the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, Mr Allaudin said that Tamil Nadu with 1400 MW of power was the highest generator of power through wind farms.
