Income Tax I-T clearance not necessary for contract bidding K.R. Srivats
New Delhi , Feb. 14 THE Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it clear that persons entering into commercial contracts need not obtain an income-tax clearance certificate from the tax department. This stance of the board, which has come in the form of a circular, follows the clarifications sought by various quarters on the need for furnishing income-tax clearance certificates at the time of bidding for contracts and in other situations. The CBDT has now clarified that there is no need for contractors to furnish such certificates while submitting tenders or obtaining commercial contracts. The board has also held that the income-tax clearance certificate would also not be required for other purposes such as registration or renewal of registration of contractors, renewal of import/export licences and renewal of shipping licences. However, the board has stipulated that all persons would be required to quote their permanent account numbers (PAN) in their tenders or other relevant documents.
