Chennai , Feb. 10

THE Tamil Nadu Government will buy more water from private well owners while expediting projects such as the new Veeranam scheme and creating more well fields to meet Chennai's requirements.

The administration will spend Rs 306 crore to bring in water to meet the city's requirement during this summer, said the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, in the Assembly on Tuesday.

However, the long-term solution to solving the city's water problem when monsoons fail is only through desalination of seawater. The Government has represented through the 12th Finance Commission to the Centre to give as grant Rs 1,500 crore for a 300-million litre a day desalination project.

For the immediate requirement, over 125 million litres of ground water is being tapped every day to supply to the 55-lakh people in Chennai. In addition, over 50 million litres is being supplied to industries.

Replying to the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address, she said that over 103 million litres of drinking water is sourced from various well fields and tankers are ferrying in 50 million litres from private farms. The supply through tankers will be increased to 75 million litres in stages. A scheme to tap 32 million litres more water from 110 farm wells will be implemented. Over 800 more borewells with hand pumps will be dug in the city.

A pipeline will be laid between Poondi and the Puzhal Lake at Red Hills to carry water from 125 rented private wells. The Rs 116.50-crore pipeline to carry 30 million litres a day will be completed by May.

The works on the Rs 720 crore New Veernam Scheme will also be completed by May. The Government is also considering a Rs 200-crore scheme to supplement the New Veeranam Scheme.
