GM getting ready to launch MUV Trevora

Sudha Menon

Pune , Feb. 8

GENERAL Motors India (GMI) is gearing up for a high-summer launch of its much-awaited multi-utility vehicle (MUV) from the Isuzu stables, the Trevora.

Top sources told Business Line that the company has also decided to bring in Daewoo's popular B-segment car, the Matiz, with a new identity, the Spark, by June 2005. The Spark will be sold under the Chevrolet brand.

The company is now ready to launch the Trevora, which was earlier to be launched as the Panther in India by April-May.

The vehicle will carry the Chevrolet badge and will take on competition in a crowded MUV market, which is currently dominated by the Qualis, Scorpio and Sumo.

The Trevora will be initially launched with a 2400-cc diesel engine as also with a turbo-charged version and will be priced aggressively with a view to bring in the numbers in a near-saturated market condition.

The engines will be sourced from Hindustan Motors and General Motors hopes to sell approximately 20,000 units annually.

The company is also betting on in its plans for the B segment to fuel growth in the next few years.

The sources said work is on right now to re-launch the Matiz, with new technology from GM Daewoo Auto& Technology Company (GMDA&TC), South Korea.

The General Motors India President, Mr Aditya Vij, when contacted said it was the company's policy not to talk about its on-going projects. "We have several projects happening just now but I cannot confirm or comment on any of them now.

"What I can say is that we are on the growth path and intend to take sales from 30,000 units that we will touch by this year end to the level of 50,000 units next year''.
