Cable operators told to register interconnect pacts

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked the broadcasting and cable service providers to register the interconnect agreement with the regulator.
In a statement, the watchdog said that all the broadcasters, including their authorised distribution agencies, and multi service operators (MSOs) are bound to register with TRAI any interconnect agreements to which they are parties within 30 days of signing the agreements or within 30 days of the coming into affect of these regulations.
This announcement has been made under the Register of Interconnect Agreement (First Amendment) Regulations, 2004, stated that all the service providers of telecom services, including broadcasting and cable services, are required to register with the Authority any interconnect agreements to which they are parties within the time frame specified in that regulations.
Cable industry officials said that the decision by the regulator is a good one as presently the interconnect agreements are not in order. This decision would bring some order to the industry, they added.
