India-UK air talks remain inconclusive

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 29

BILATERAL talks between India and the UK air services ended inconclusively on Thursday with both sides agreeing to meet again in the near future.

The next round of talks could be held as early as the week beginning March 8, although no firm decision has been taken as yet, official sources said.

While refusing to comment on the reason for the talks remaining inconclusive, the sources said some issues could not be sorted out at the talks. "The two sides are to meet again shortly to carry the process forward."

They indicated that the reasons for talks remaining inconclusive include the non-availability of proper slots at Heathrow for Indian carriers and the Indian side not being inclined to accept the alternate slots being offered at other airports in the UK.

Besides, the Indian side was also bogged down in meetings with an Ethiopian delegation and the visit of a senior Canadian Minister, which were held simultaneously.

The talks had originally been scheduled for two days till Wednesday, but both sides agreed to carry on discussions for another day.

The last round of such talks, held in June 2002, also remained inconclusive.

The sources had indicated before the talks that the British side was keen on increasing the frequency of flights to several southern cities, including Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

While British Airways (BA) operates 19 weekly flights to India, including a daily flight to both Delhi and Mumbai, Virgin Atlantic Airways (VAA) operates three weekly flights to Delhi.
