Social security

This is with reference to "Social security plan for unorganised sector" (Business Line, January 24). The proposed scheme suffers from the following pitfalls:

  • It has been introduced only in 50 select districts on a pilot basis.

  • Given the fact that most of the workers of the unorganised sector are either self-employed or work under different employers, the proposal that the `employer' will contribute Rs 50 per month cannot be implemented.

  • The proposal that Government will contribute 1.16 per cent on the national floor level minimum wages has no relevace to the actual wages earned by the workers or the number of days for which he worked.
