Cotton contract farming urged in TN

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The concept of contract farming in cotton is being advocated by the Agriculture Department for the farmers of the Cauvery delta region.

According to Mr Arupathi Kalyanam, General Secretary of the Farmers' Federation of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts, the initiative was welcome as cotton is not a water-intensive crop. However, he emphasised the need for spot payments for farmers. The implementing agency should make available to the farmers through the Internet details on cotton movement, production and price levels.

Further, he said though cotton is being cultivated in certain parts in these districts, the present effort is to raise the area of cultivation in association with a Pollachi-based company, which in a tie-up with a private sector bank, is willing to fund the programme.

The Central Institute of Cotton Research in Coimbatore is said to have developed suitable and high yielding varieties of cotton such as surabi and subamangala, suitable for this region, he said.
