Agricultural Policy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Contract Farming 'Govt will introduce contract farming' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 12 THE Union Minister for Agriculture, Mr Rajnath Singh, has said that the Government was committed to introducing contract farming in the country. He also said that seed production would be brought under the crop insurance scheme before the next kharif season and a separate "Kisan channel" would be started on Doordarshan. Addressing as a chief guest at the first anniversary celebrations of the Indian Seed Industry Association (INSIA), Mr Singh said that the Task Force on seed industry and seed producers, headed by Dr M.S. Swaminathan, was expected to submit its recommendations in a fortnight. The Government would initiate action on the recommendation soon after they were submitted. The Minister emphasised that the new Farm Income Insurance Scheme would transform the agricultural scenario in the country in a span of five years. Under the scheme, an average of a farmer's seven years produce would be calculated and if the farmer's produce was less than the average produce in any year, he would be compensated for the loss in production as per the prevailing minimum support price. The scheme, introduced last month in 20 districts of 13 States on a pilot basis, would be extended to other parts of the country. Earlier, welcoming the gathering INSIA President, Mr M. Prabhakar Rao, urged the Government to launch a technology mission for quality seeds to consolidate all initiatives in the seed sector and encourage quality seed production. He also wanted the Government to encourage the indigenous seed industry that was currently facing severe competition from multinational enterprises. Like in the case of farm loans, he sought reduction in the interest rate to 7.5 per cent on the working capital and term loans given to the seed industry.
