E-Governance Industry & Economy - Rural Development Community info centres to be set up in J&K K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad , Jan. 12 THE Union Government has decided to set up Community Information Centres (CIC) across Jammu and Kashmir, replicating the `successful' experiment in the North-East. "We are going to do it right away," a senior Department of Information Technology official told Business Line. "The CICs, set up in 500 blocks in the eight States of the North-East, have given connectivity to even remote villages in the region, offering a variety of e-governance services to the citizens," the official said. The Rs 242-crore five-year Central project, launched in August 2002, is aimed at providing the technology and connectivity, while States are required to handle human resources and day-to-day operations. "J&K has a similar geographical terrain which will greatly be benefited by the centres. While the long-term target is to provide the information technology and telecom infrastructure to all the blocks in the country, our next priority would be Lakshadweep," the official said.
