Letters Regional cooperation
This is with reference to the editorial "Strong on SAFTA" (Business Line, January 8). The South Asian countries, especially India and Pakistan, have started realising the importance of regional economic cooperation and bilateral trade. While many countries of the world enjoy the benefits of regional trade and cooperation, the members of SAARC lag behind because of the rivalry between India and Pakistan. Given the present friendly atmosphere between India and Pakistan, one hopes that concrete and sincere efforts will be taken by SAARC to form a regional economic union on the lines of the EU in the near future. To achieve this, the largest countries of the region — India and Pakistan — should build confidence among the least developed nations of the region such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives.
